Staal Cycles was an idea formulated by our founder whilst living in the beautiful West Flanders countryside. Now based in Hailsham, East Sussex, you will still notice the subtle Belgian influences in our bikes and our name, the Flemish word for “Steel”.
At Staal we draw on our vast experiences, ranging from being an apprentice frame builder with Roberts, to working for Giant, the worlds largest bike manufacturer. With over 20 year experience in the cycle industry, we have the skills and knowledge to make your dream bike a reality.
Our bicycles are 100% handmade, no mills, lathes or other electronic wizardry is used. Every single mitre and cut is made by hand, not machine. We believe in the craft of frame building and have spent countless hours learning from the elders of the trade to perfect the classic techniques. To this, we add modern performance and geometries to make truly unique bicycles that ride and perform like nothing else on the market.
The freehand build techniques we use are the same
that were used by Roberts Cycles, Bill Philbrook, Holdsworth, Ron Cooper
and Bill Hurlow (to name a few!). This classic style of frame building is much
more time consuming but is, in our opinion, considerably more accurate and
produces a bike that rides and handles perfectly.
